Mel Gibson's wife Robyn Gibson has filed for divorce after 28 years of marriage to the Hollywood star.

Earlier this month, Mel was spotted in an intimate embrace on a beach in Costa Rica with an attractive brunette, prompting Robyn to go ahead with proceedings at a Los Angeles Superior Court.

The mystery woman was later identified as Russian musician Orksana - whom Mel met on the set of his latest film.

Robyn cited "irreconcilable differences" as the reason for their pending divorce, stating that the time of their separation was "to be determined", while Mel pin pointed to his 2006 DUI arrest as the moment the marriage went stale.

The couple released a joint statement last night: "Throughout our marriage and separation we have always strived to maintain the privacy and integrity of our family and will continue to do so."

Mel and Robyn have seven children - Robyn is seeking joint custody of the youngest, Tom, who is ten this week.
