Chris Brown has pleaded not guilty to two felony counts of assault and making criminal threats stemming from his alleged attack on girlfriend Rihanna in February

The R&B star was barely audible as he told a judge, “Not guilty, your honour,” in answer to the charges against him.

Chris, dressed in a black cardigan and tie, was accompanied by his mother and two burly bodyguards at the brief hearing.

Rihanna - who has reportedly ended her relationship with the Run It star, much to the relief of her friends and family - was not present for the arraignment.

The judge set the next hearing for April 29, when Chris will not be required to attend.

His legal team are believed to have been trying to hammer out a plea deal with prosecutors to prevent him having to serve any jail time.

If convicted, he faces probation to a maximum four years and eight months in state prison, prosecutors say.

Chris has been accused of punching, choking, and threatening to kill Rihanna in a fight just hours before their scheduled performance at the Grammys.
