Natasha Richardson has "no chance" of survival after suffering severe brain injuries on a recent skiing trip, according to a close family friend.

The British star is said to be lying "brain dead" after a seemingly innocuous fall on the slopes at a Mont Tremblant ski resort in Quebec, Canada, left her in a critical condition.

"There is no chance," a family friend told People on Tuesday night.

"It is a fact that her heart is beating but she is brain dead."

The friend goes onto describe Natasha's condition as fatal, with the "leakage of blood between the brain and skull," meaning that she is not likely to recover.

Meanwhile, the actress' mother Vanessa Redgrave, husband Liam Neeson and sister Joely Richardson all face the possiblity of having to make the decision to turn off her life support machine.

The friend adds, "It's not official yet,  but they basically will detach her."

Yesterday, Time Out New York claimed online that Natasha had died, claiming its editors had been tipped off by a close family friend.

The item disappeared from Time Out's website shortly afterwards and editors sent out an apology for reporting her death, but insisted, "We stand by our new statement that she is brain dead and not expected to survive."
