Los Angeles police have launched an internal investigation after a photograph showing Rihanna's "horrific" injuries, allegedly at the hands of ex-boyfriend Chris Brown, surfaced online.
The shocking snap - posted by TMZ - features a close-up of what appears to be the Umbrella singer with heavy bruising on her forehead, a swollen nose and a bloody lip.
Following the publication of the gruesome photo, the LAPD said in a statement: “The Los Angeles Police Department takes seriously its duty to maintain the confidentiality of victims of domestic violence.
"A violation of this type is considered serious misconduct, with penalties up to and including termination."

The leaked photograph was allegedly taken following the former couple's February 8 altercation - which police are still investigating - although it is not yet known where it was sourced.
It follows the circulation of another photograph purportedly showing Rihanna's injuries, which turned out to be a Photoshopped paparazzi picture of the singer.
