Chace Crawford and Ed Westwick failed to shrug off rumours about the exact nature of their relationship during an appearance on US TV yesterday. 

The pair had just joined The View ladies on the sofa when they were asked if they were an item.

In response to a question about their status as room-mates in Manhattan, Chace jokingly insisting it was like "a book club."

Chat show host Joy Behar then asked, "Are you a couple?"

Chace immediately turned to her and said "Oh Joy c'mon I knew you were going to do this to me."

After an awkward silence, Ed hinted at how close he was to his Gossip Girl co-star.

"We are a...we are...we're having a lot of fun, that's for sure," he revealed.

But neither star actually responding to the question directly and Ed then changed the subject.

"The place is reasonably tidy, you'll be pleased to know," he said of their apartment."
