After weeks of rumours and denials, Britney Spears has confirmed that she will raise the curtain on MTV’s Music Video Awards this Sunday.

The recovering pop wreck appeared alongside awards host Russell Brand in a series of ads but until now has stayed tight lipped about a possible appearance at the event.

But in a statement released yestersay, The Piece Of Me singer says, "MTV has long played an important role in my career. How can I not be there to kick off their 25th VMAs?

"I'm excited to open the entire show, to say hi to my fans and to be nominated."

Rumours have also circulated that Britney will perform and present an award with gold-medallist champion Michael Phelps.

She's nominated for three prizes on Sunday - Best Female Video, Best Pop Video and Video of the Year for Piece of Me.
