FAST TALK: Dustin Hoffman Gets Animated! ...more »
...more Angelina Jolie »

Few actors get to that stage in their careers where they are considered a ‘living legend’, even fewer live up to that accolade. However, at 70-years-old, Dustin Hoffman can truly be considered to be one of those few. From starring with icons like Steve McQueen in Papillon, or Laurence Olivier in Marathon Man, to creating pop culture history with The Graduate and teaming up with Tom Cruise in the amazing Rain Man, the pint-sized Californian has become one of the giants of acting.

In recent years he has starred in successful comedies like Meet The Fockers and family movie Mr Magorium’s Wonder Emporium. Entertainmentwise caught up with him at the London premiere of his new animated film, Kung Fu Panda, which also stars Jack Black and Angelina Jolie.

Are you enjoying the reception the film has received, both here and in the US?

Yes, absolutely! You’re lucky when you make a movie that’s animated, and it turns out to be a hit. But it is luck!

Was there anything you asked to be changed about your character when you saw the first sketches?

Yes, most specifically I didn’t know what my animal was! I don’t think it’s ever said that my character (Shifu) is a rare, small Red Panda. Of course I wanted him to look more like Brad Pitt! You know, a lot taller, better looking! But then Jack is the star of the movie so I couldn’t steal his thunder. Other than that, little things - I rarely get the chance to alter my own nose in real life so I got it shortened a bit.

You’ve done a lot of comedy roles recently, when are we going to see you in a more gritty, serious role?

A thousand people I’ve talked to today, and you’re the first one to drag me down! (laughs) I am doing more serious stuff soon, particularly Last Chance Harvey, with Emma Thompson, which is out this winter. Are you people never satisfied? (laughs).

Kung Fu Panda hits UK cinemas 4th July.
