Tony Romo has reportedly agreed to give his relationship with Jessica Simpson another shot – but only if her meddling father Joe keeps his distance.

The couple’s romantic status has remained a mystery amid persistent reports of a split, despite the pair being seen together on a number of occasions in recent weeks.

Now one of Romo’s college buddies is lifting the lid on what caused the split.

''He did agree to go to [sister Ashlee's] wedding - keeping his promise to Jessica,'' an unnamed source tells the Sun Times.

''But he made it super-clear that if they were to give it another go, her dad had to seriously back off.''

Joe Simpson manages both Jessica and sister Ashlee’s careers - and is well-known for taking a hands on approach to their private lives as well.

Apparently, three was most definitely a crowd for Romo.

The source adds that the Dallas Cowboy has agreed to a ''trial'' reunion, dependent on Joe ''leaving them alone.”
