Tom Cruise set tongues wagging with a visit to the set of the upcoming Star Trek movie.

The alien-adversary's surprise appearance prompted speculation that he may be joining the cast, as was the case when he showed up to the set of Ben Stiller comedy, Tropic Thunder.

However, MSNBC's The Scoop reports that Tom -  as a pal of director J.J. Abrams and a huge Dr Spock fan - was merely paying a social call.

“He asked J.J. if there’s a way he can meet Leonard Nimoy. He said he’d always really respected his work,” says their source.
