Princess Diana's 'love of her life' Dr Hasnat Khan has granted his first ever interview, praising the late Royal.
The 48-year-old consultant cardiologist has refused to discuss his romance with Diana - who is said to have wanted to marry Khan before he ended their relationship - but has praised the Princess' qualities.
He tells The Mail On Sunday, "I found her a very normal person. We all have our drawbacks, but I found her a very normal person with great qualities, and some personal drawbacks, like bad habits. We all have drawbacks.
"I think she did great work for the country and for people all over the world – not just in the UK but everywhere. I think that is important.
"At the end of the day, I think she was a very normal person and she did her work very well, raising the kids and everything else. That's the truth. I'm an uncritical observer in that way."
However, as an inquest into Diana's death in a car crash in Paris in 1997 continues, Dr Khan - who split with his wife of 18 months in November - admits he wishes he could put the past behind him now.
"Sometimes I feel like screaming," he explains. "There have been very bad times. I have moved on, but it keeps coming back."
