Last night’s British Television Awards stumped Ant and Dec as they won three awards despite being at the centre of a telephone votes scandal.

The cheeky Geordie duo accepted their gong for Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway from Los Angeles via a satellite link.

Ant McPartlin said: We didn’t expect this one. It’s been a couple of tough weeks, especially for Saturday Night Takeaway.”

Declan Donnelly added: “We can’t tell you how grateful we are. And we can’t wait to bring toy series eight next year.”

Another winner was Doctor Who actor David Tennant who picked up an award for best actor the second year running.

Top Gear host Jeremy Clarkson received a big cheer as Lewis Hamilton presented him with a Special Recognition Award.
