Rihanna has defended her pop rival Britney Spears' much-criticised performance at the MTV Video Music Awards.

Spears' barely mimed rendition of her comeback single 'Gimme More' was universally derided, but according to Rihanna the performance represented Britney's best effort in the circumstances.

She says, "You can't judge her performance without knowing what was going on with her personally. She had so much pressure for that one performance.

"I'm telling you, it's not easy being on that stage. I performed for a minute and a half, and I was extremely nervous.

"To have the amount of pressure that Britney had? I don't know what I would've done. She did her best, so leave her alone."

i respect rihanna. i mean i luv her songs, but wasn't she just laughing at brit's performance during the vma's or she had a change of heart?

Everybody who loves Britney Spears is/was hating on Rihanna because she was laughing during Spears' performance! How are we supposed to know what she is laughing at though? I like what I see Rihanna, you're sticking up for her made you that much more of a better person, not saying you were bad or anything to begin with, just saying that makes you ten times better than you were before in my book!

rihanna has a great heart..and i deff. agree with hur..i might not know how it feels to be on a stage and perform in front of millions of people but britney has had alot goin on latly and for rihanna being the only one who really sapported britney and respected hur shows who has a great heart..ILOVEE RIHANNA!!!
