Former Savage Garden frontman Darren Hayes has been given a police caution following his arrest earlier this year for allegedly racially abusing a restaurant worker.

A spokesperson for Scotland Yard has confirmed today (September 21st) that a thirty-five year old man was cautioned under section five of the Public Order Act - which covers disorderly behaviour.

Hayes has now admitted that a row did taken place at the Busaba Eathai restaurant in London on July 22nd but said that "any notion of racism had been ruled out" by police.

The singer was arrested a month later in August after a member of staff at the restaurant lodged a formal complaint.

In a statement Hayes said: "I could never think, let alone utter a racist remark. As a gay man, I find the notion of discriminating against a human being because of race, gender or sexuality to be abhorrent. It goes against everything I have stood for."

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson failed to comment on whether the incident was still be viewed as racially motivated, reports the BBC.
