It’s hard to believe from last night’s lacklustre performance that there was a time when Britney Spears’ VMA performances made headlines for all the right reasons.

The pop-wreck's run of memorable VMA spectaculars began with her debut performance of Hit Me Baby One More Time in 1999.

Britney shed her good-girl image for once and for all with a sultry striptease at the 2000 awards. Wearing a black suit and matching fedora, she started with a breathy version of the Rolling Stones' (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction, before ripping away her clothes to reveal a flesh-colored bodysuit and launching into Oops!...I Did It Again.

Britney attempted to go one better for her 2001 performance of I'm a Slave 4 U by bringing out a giant albino python mid-song. The crowd loved it, PETA not so much.

Britney joined Madonna and Christina Aguilera on stage at the 2003 awards for an updated, saphic take on Madge’s Like A Virgin. Headlines were guaranteed when a top-hatted and tailed Madonna locked lips with Britney and Christina, dressed in virginial white.
