Leonard Nimoy, the actor who made Mr. Spock a Sci-fi legend in the original Star Trek, is to appear in the forthcoming Star Trek movie, directed by JJ Abrams. The news has been announced by none other than Kirk himself, actor William Shatner via his Shatnervision feature on his MySpace.com page.
Shatner told viewers about his reaction to their being a new movie featuring their characters. He (Nimoy) said, 'I've read the script.' I said, 'Is it a good script?' He says, 'Yeah.' I said, 'Am I in it?' And there was a pause. He said no and then he began to laugh. I went through the phone as I grabbed him by the throat. He's in it. I'm not in it.
The former captain of the enterprise seemed upset his omission from the new movie, however this and Nimoys involvement suggests certain points about the plot.
Initially it had been rumoured that the film would feature a flash-forward, to when the characters were old men. It was thought that both Kirk and Spock would feature, however Kirks death, which was the subject of the film Star Trek: Generations, would mean it would be Spock only, presuming they were keeping to the official timeline of the Trek universe.
The deaths of actors James Doohan (Scotty) and DeForest Kelly (Dr. McCoy) suggest Nimoy may be the only original cast member to return.
The film is scheduled for a 2008 release.
