While the WWE attempt to hide any mention of Chris Benoit on their website, and toy manufacturers discontinuing his play-figures, others are trying to cash in on the wrestlers tragedy by selling his highly sought-after merchandise for high prices on ebay.
Most toy retailers have stopped stocking the Chris Benoit action figures because they do not want to send the wrong message out to children who are their biggest market.
However, the dolls and other merchandise are up on auction sites such as ebay, with items such as autographed trading cards selling for $130. There are also website domains featuring Chris Benoits name selling for a buy it now price of $10,000.
The interesting thing about collectibles is it's really difficult to figure out what's going to cause something to go up in value," said Joe Field, owner of Flying Color Comics in Concord talking to InsideBayArea. "When there's an increase in the public awareness of a figure, there's going to be an instantaneous market, but in terms of it being anything that lasts is more uncertain."
