Activists for Gay rights in America have turned on actor John Travolta for cross-dressing in the remake of �Hairspray�, branding him a hypocrite as they say his religion disapproves of homosexuality.

A writer for a gay rights website said: �Travolta, a prominent Scientologist, has no business for reprising an iconic gay role.

�It's well known that Scientology rejects gays and lesbians as members and even operates reparative therapy clinics to 'cure' homosexuality. Divine is spinning in his grave�.

The latter comment refers to Divine, the cross-dressing actor who played Edna in John Waters� 1988 original movie, which also starred Ricki Lake.
