Spider-Man 3 has set a new box office record in America by taking $59 million in its first day of release.
According to makers Sony, the action sequel has beaten the previous first day takings record of last year�s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest by just over $3 million, despite a muted reception from the critics.
Paul Dergarabedian of box office tracker Media By Numbers tells the BBC, �That's why they call him the amazing Spider-Man Just five years ago, these are numbers we thought we'd never see."
