The Queen has been apparently left "close to tears" following grandson Prince William's split from Kate Middleton.

The British monarch was known to get on particularly well with Kate, and is reportedly "devastated" her five year relationship with Wills came to an end this week.

A source tells The People, "She thought William had judged it perfectly with Kate and had learned from the mistakes of his father.

"Charles failed to marry Camilla despite being in love and married 19-year-old Diana when he was 32.

"The marriage was a disaster and when it collapsed the backlash against the monarchy created a crisis from which it has never properly recovered.

"The Queen wonders how William could possibly meet anybody more suitable than Kate, as does Prince Philip. They fear that in a few years he will see her as the soulmate who got away."

The 'senior Palace source' adds that the Queen has been all teary eyed since the news, explaining, "The Queen is devastated beyond words.

"Those close to her yesterday said she was forlorn and as close to tears as they had ever seen her."

Still, it takes a decommissioned yacht to actually start the tears flowing though...
