The writer of the original, William Monahan, is apparently working on a new story involving the cop played by Mark Wahlberg.
Although any sequel would have to be approved by Scorsese, chances of a follow-up are high as the original was a big hit in both the UK and US.
Also nominated for five Academy Awards including those for Best Picture and Best Director, it is Martin Scorsese�s latest chance to finally win the Oscar that has eluded him all these years.
The Departed was based on a 2002 Hong Kong film entitled Infernal Affairs; the studio Warner Bros also owns the rights to Infernal Affair�s two sequels.
