U2 frontman Bono has been awarded an honorary knighthood from the Queen.
The Irish singer will receive the establishment gong honour for "his services to the music industry and for his humanitarian work from the British ambassador to Dublin in a ceremony of New Year's Day.
A spokeserson for the British Embassy - slipping in a nice little Bill and Ted impression - says, "Her Majesty The Queen has appointed Bono to be an honorary Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire in recognition of his services to the music industry and for his humanitarian work."
Bono, real name Paul Hewson, has in recent years focussed as much on his campaigning to combat poverty and debt in Africa - culminating in the Live 8 events - as his bombastic rock music.
The singer's fellow Live 8 organisor Bob Geldof received the same award twenty years ago.
