Mel Gibson's 'Apocalypto' Tops The US Box Office

Despite Mel Gibsons anti-Semitic rant while under the influence earlier this year, his new film Apocalypto has topped the US box office.

Gibson had feared he had irrevocably damaged his Hollywood career after his much publicised rant at two police officers in Malibu.

However, the film has raked in $14.2million in its opening weekend.

The full top 10 is as follows:

1. Apocalypto ($14.2m)
2. The Holiday ($13.5m)
3. Happy Feet ($12.7m)
4. Casino Royale ($8.8m)
5. Blood Diamond ($8.5m)
6. Unaccompanied Minors ($6.2m)
7. Deja Vu ($6m)
8. The Nativity Story($5.4m)
9. Deck the Halls ($3.9m)
10. The Santa Clause 3 ($3.3m)

Apocalypto shows the conquest of one Central American tribe by its neighbouring tribe; it has been criticised for depicting tribes as being savages.
