REM, The Stooges and Patti Smith are amongst the artists nominated for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in America.

The ceremony is due to take place at the Wharfdale Astoria Hotel in New York on March 12

At the moment there are nine acts up for the honour, also including the Dave Clarke Five, Chic and Grandmaster Flash.

This will be whittled down to a list of five in January.
