A man is currently fighting for his life after being struck in the chest by a stingrays barb in Florida.
The attack mirrors the one that killed Australian legend Steve Irwin who was killed after he was struck by a barb off the coast of Queensland.
James Bertakis, 81, was stung after a stingray leapt onto his boat before stinging him leaving the barb embedded in his chest.
Bertakis granddaughter who was also on board said to the Mirror of her grandfathers injuries: Every time his heart pumps, its like a razor blade, it just keeps cutting.
The pensioner is currently in hospital and doctors have already removed a portion of the barb.
Professor Ellen Pikitch from the University of Miami said of the attack: This is really rare. Stingrays dont usually attack.
Are stingrays fighting back?
