The spherical faced singer said going into rehab was like walking to the edge of a cliff and looking into the abyss.
He continued: You can either jump off or turn round and walk back. Thankfully for me it was the latter.
Chaplin was speaking to Radio 1 shortly after his band returned to the live stage at the Hull Arena on Tuesday evening.
He said that despite some peoples preconceptions, rehab wasnt an easy ride: Its a psychiatric hospital.
I think some people have this impression of it as some sort of health spa.
But there are a lot of people in there, including myself, with some very serious problems. Theyre dealing with life and death.
Having won the current battle with drugs and alcohol, Chaplin still realises that a difficult road lies ahead: Drugs and drink and all those things are something that are everywhere now.
I have to be aware and be careful of it.
