Shakira Calls For Peace In The Middle-East ...more Shakira »

Columbian popstar Shakira has done her bit for world peace by calling for an immediate end to the escalating violence in Israel and Lebanon.

The Grammy-winning singer, 29, who is part-Lebanese herself, says she has been horrified by the loss of innocent life in the conflict between Hezbollah and the Israeli army and wants to see an immediate diplomatic solution.

She says, War is not the answer. War is not the solution to any conflict - not today, not in this century.

"I am sad, like the rest of the world is, to know that because of this conflict so many innocent mothers and children are dying.

"We want something better for the kids of the world. We don't need leaders that create more divisions and resentment and more hatred. We need leaders that care about the people."

Well, we may scoff, but there hasnt exactly been an outpouring of opinion from other figures in the music community has there?
On second thoughts, we think weve heard enough from Bono already

Poll  Is Shakira's statement the breakthrough the Middle-East needs?

Yes

No

  • All she has to do is sleep with the top commanders on both sides and peace will be achieved. If Shakira enlisted Christina Aguilera and Beyonce, they could stop the genocide in Darfur and Mogadishu. Less shooting, more shagging. You have to think global now to make a difference. And its not like any of these ladies haven’t done hundreds of guys before. Drrrtty for a reason..........

  • Shakira is a lovely, talented woman but I don’t think her call for peace will make a dent. Can’t blame her for trying though.

  • What? Do you want her to go there and make war stop with her own bare hands? She’s doing what she can do. She knows she can’t make war stop just by talking, but she knows also that, with her fame, talking will make people’s pay atention to what is going on. She’s in her right to claim some attitude from leaders and her intention is to instigate people to do the same. Everybody who truly knows Shakira knows that her career can’t be compared to Aguilera’s and Beyonce’s.

  • Stop criticising people for using their fame to raise awareness about serious issues. Of course she can’t physically make a difference all by herself, but it certainly sends a message to my generation about pointless conflict and hopefully some situations like this will be avoided in the future. It is so horrible how innocent lives are lost in political situations & I have a lot of respect for Shakira for speaking out in opposition of the violence

  • Shakira has family in Lebanon where she owns a house in Beirut. Therefore she has been hassled into giving a statement by the hispanic press on the situation since it began. she’s always been political but her record company doesn’t like her associating herself with her lebanese background (her father is lebanese) so this is something they won’t like. She’s very popular in both Israel and Lebanon. Surely someone giving their honest opinion and answer in a difficult situation is to be applauded?
