Tom Hanks Defends 'The Da Vinci Code'
Hollywood actor Tom Hanks has defended his controversial new film The Da Vinci Code and has asked its critics not to take it too seriously.

Speaking to Londons Evening Standard, Hanks said: "If you are going to take any sort of movie at face value, particularly a huge-budget motion picture like this, you'd be making a very big mistake."

"We always knew there would be a segment of society that would not want this movie to be shown."

Ever since the film went into production the Catholic film has called for a boycott of the film and in doing so has only increased the publicity surrounding the film and Dan Browns best selling novel.

The film tells the story of a cover up within the church about the secret children of Jesus Christ and Mary Magdalene, Hanks went on to describe the film as a lot of fun.

Self harming monks and bodies in the Louvre is fun?Intense and mesmerising, yes but not a whole load of fun really.

The Da Vinci Code premieres at the Cannes Film Festival on May 17.
