Over 2,000 crusty faced teenagers voted for their top 50 Rock and Roll heroes, and unsurprisingly Doherty ranked high in their estimation.
Thankfully the magazine has recognised that Dohertys junkie antics are more trampy then anything else.
According to Ananova, a spokesperson for the NME said: "Surely he's just a worn-out drug addict who needs help if he's ever going to make decent music again?"
"Yes, there was a time when Pete Doherty lived his life with an unrivalled romantic zest, when he represented a truly anti-establishment voice. But is he really still your hero? Now that his second home seems to be the courtroom?"
However, Doherty only managed to make it second in the new poll, dead Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain was named top rockerhe killed himself back in 1994 and was also a heavy drugs user.
Morrissey came third, Liam Gallagher fourth and former Libertine Carl Barat limped in a fifth placemaybe he should get more off his face once in a while.
