In the new film Hanks has been horribly mis-cast and will play the supposedly dashing academic Robert Langdon.
He thinks that many religious establishments should use the film as a starting point of religious debate that will in turn encourage more people to attend church.
Many religious leaders disagree and have encouraged people to boycott the film.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly Hanks said: "I think the movie may end up helping churches do their job.
"If they put up a sign saying: 'This Wednesday we're discussing the gospel,' 12 people show up. But if a sign says: 'This Wednesday we're discussing The Da Vinci Code,' 800 people show up."
The film will make its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival later this year.
