Duchess Of Cambridge: New Zealand Authorities Accused Of Risking Safety Of Royal Couple

The royal family will arrive Down Under on Monday

The New Zealand Government have been accused of risking the safety of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge ahead of the royal tour to the country next week, after releasing exact details of the couple's itinerary.

The Department of Internal Affair's have been releasing details of where and when to see the couple via the Governor-General's social media, something former head of royal protection for the Metropolitan Police Dai Davies has claimed is an act of idiocy.

He reportedly told The Daily Mirror: "I'm appalled at the idiocy of any idiot who would publish this far in advance both route and location."

He claimed releasing precise details of the couple's movements was like giving a "manual to terrorists, nutters and fixated people hoping to harm them".

However backtracking during an interview on New Zealand show Firstline he said: "I haven't seen the Governor-General's tweets. I was interviewed yesterday by a newspaper that clearly published a great deal of what I said – some of it without my authority."

"I don't know the intelligence structure and the system or the intelligence about anything in New Zealand – I merely express it's not the way I'd do it, and I have advised a great number of people on security and safety."

Allen Walley, the media manager of the royal visit, told the New Zealand Herald that they'd breached no regulations by publishing the information.

"There is no problem with it, all of this was planned well in advance, it was signalled to Kensington Palace and it was cleared with New Zealand Police," he said.

A spokesperson for Kensington Palace agreed that the information released was in keeping with previous tours and royal occasions.

He said: "It is usual practice with royal visits to New Zealand to release details of where and when the public can see members of the royal family one week before the start of the visit.

"This is entirely consistent with previous Royal visits, such as the Diamond Jubilee tour in 2012."

The Duke and Duchess, as well as Prince George, will arrive Down Under on Monday April 7 at the Military Terminal at Wellington Airport where the public will be able to get their first glimpse of the couple. Their first public engagement will be on April 10 at Seymour Square in Blenheim where they will be laying a wreath at the Blenheim War Memorial and Clock Tower before a public walkabout.
