The widow of Superman actor Christopher Reeve, Dana Reeve has died of lung cancer at 44.
The non smoking actress who led the Christopher Reeve foundation was only diagnosed with the disease in August, just 16 months after her husband died.
The couple married in 1992 and had one child together, three years after their marriage Reeve was paralysed from the neck down after a bad riding accident.
She nursed him for nine years, giving up her career to be his main carer.
After he died she took over the responsibility of the Christopher Reeve Foundation
Chief executive of the foundation Kathy Lewis said: "We are extremely saddened by the death of Dana Reeve, whose grace and courage under the most difficult of circumstances was a source of comfort and inspiration to all of us,"
According to the BBC, former President Bill Clinton and his wife Senator Hilary Clinton said of Reeve: "Despite the adversity that she faced, Dana bravely met these challenges and was always an extremely devoted wife, mother and advocate. Dana was an inspiration to us and we will miss her."
