Watch: First Look At Andre 3000 As Jimi Hendrix In New Movie, All Is By My Side

Film features Jimi's rise to stardom

The first footage from the highly anticipated Jimi Hendrix biopic, All Is By My Side has been released online, giving fans of the music legend an opportunity to judge lead actor, Andre Benjamin, better known as Outkast's Andre 3000.

Director John Ridley has decided to release footage online from his biopic, All Is By My Side featuring the singer Andre 3000 as Jimi Hendrix. The film focuses on the guitar supremo's life between 1966 and 1967, which is where his fame finally took off.

The official synopsis for the film explained: “Jimmy James, an unknown backup guitarist, left New York City for London, England in 1966. A year later he returned - as Jimi Hendrix."

"All Is By My Side brings authenticity and poignancy to the story of the man behind the legend, and of the people who loved and inspired him."

Given Hendrix's incredible popularity, Andre 3000 undoubtedly felt the pressure to deliver an authentic performance. The singer told MTV that he prepared for the role by studying old footage of Jimi. He said: "[I] listened to hours of interviews [and] watched his mannerisms."

Well it looks like his time has been well spent, as the 80 second clip proves that Andre 3000 makes a fairly convincing Hendrix.

However, if you are looking forward to hearing Andre perform some Hendrix classics you may be disappointed to find out that the deceased singer's estate actually refused the film the rights to Hendrix material, meaning none of his original music will feature in the biopic.

Don't worry there will still be singing. Producers opted to have him cover tracks from Elvis, the Beatles and Elmore James.

We have high hopes for the movie as it was written and directed by John Ridley, who you might recognise as the 2014 Oscar winner for Best Adapted Screenplay for his script, 12 Years A Slave.

Jimi Hendrix film aside, Andre 3000 is due to reunite with his Outkast band mates for several festival appearances this summer, including Coachella, Counterpoint, Wireless and Bestival. Although he and Outkast member, Big Boi have denied rumours that a new album is in the works.
