Oscar Nominee Luncheon: Julia Roberts And Woody Allen Are No Shows Amid Personal Drama

Academy Award nominees gathered at the Beverly Hills Hotel yesterday

The annual Oscar nominees luncheon was held on Monday at the Beverley Hilton Hotel, in Los Angeles and while attendees included the likes of Lead Actress hopefuls Sandra Bullock and Amy Adams there were also some notable absences.

The event, held three weeks before the Academy Awards, gives a chance for this year's nominees to bask in the glory of their Oscar hopes and mix with their peers as well as posing for the all important group photo.

However, nominees Julia Roberts and director Woody Allen both chose not to attend the glittering lunch and while it's not been confirmed why, it's likely it could be due to recent events in their personal life. Roberts, who has previously won a golden statue, received her fourth Oscar nomination for Best supporting actress in August: Osage County this year.

However the actress yesterday received the news that her half-sister Nancy Motes had been found dead of a suspected drugs overdose in Los Angeles. A statement from the family to the media, via People magazine, claimed they were "devastated" at the news.

Another notable absence was director Woody Allen whose movie Blue Jasmine is up for three awards, including Best Original Screenplay for Allen himself. The director has recently been forced to address allegations he abused a seven year-old Dylan Farrow during his relationship with her mother Mia Farrow during the 1980s.

The allegations, first made in 1992 when the couple separated after 12 years together, were recently renewed in an Op-Ed by the 28 year-old published in the New York Times earlier this month. Allen has insisted he is innocent of all allegations.

The timing of the letter had been questioned by those in the media, who speculate it may have been in an effort to scupper Allen's Oscar bid. The no-show might not be a sign of anything from the private film maker, who failed to attend the Golden Globe Awards in January where he was awarded the Cecil B. DeMille Award by long-term friend and former girlfriend Diane Keaton.
