The plaid gay cowboy shirts were auctioned on eBay by the films distributor Focus Features, reports MSN and were eventually bought by a gay activist.
The successful bidder Tom Gregory said that the shirts represented the ongoing plight of gay men who are not accepted into society.
He said that he intended to keep them "as they were, on the hanger, entwined".
"I would never wear them, put them on, or separate them."
The money raised from the sale will go to the Children's Charity of Southern California.
