He’s designed engagement rings for Bachelor contestants, Britney Spears and Miley Cyrus, but jeweler Neil Lane is calling the sparkler he created for Ashlee Simpson, “one of the most beautiful rings I’ve ever done.” The ring, which Ashlee’s now-fiancé, Evan Ross, used to pop the question last week in Hawaii, was custom-designed by Evan and Neil.
Evan, who is the 25 year-old son of Motown legend Diana Ross, spent over a month designing the ring for his bride-to-be, according to Neil Lane. “He took it very seriously and it was a wonderfully intense process,” Neil told People. “Evan was really, really sweet and he was looking for something beautiful, a unique ring that said everything: love, romance, beauty, character. He didn’t want anything traditional.”

In stark contrast to the four-carat, Asscher-cut traditional engagement ring given to her by her first husband, Pete Wentz in 2008, Evan’s ring features a design from Neil Lane’s vintage archival collection, with a marquise-cut diamond surrounded by small rubies and an elongated navette style. Ashlee’s mother, Tina, and big sis Jessica—who is also currently sporting a Neil Lane sparkler on her left hand—helped Evan create the perfect ring.
“He wanted to do the right thing. This is a young fellow in love,” said Neil. “His taste level is exquisite and he wanted to make sure it was a perfect ring for his love.”
The finished five-carat ring is set in platinum and gold and features 140 white diamonds accented with rubies. Ashlee, who showed off her ring and new fiancé in a Twitter photo on January 13, was thrilled with Evan’s work.
“She was overwhelmed!” Neil said of Ashlee’s response to the ring. “Oh my God, they are so in love.”
