Oscar Gets A Makeover As The Academy Unveils New Logo

The gold oval surrounding the famous statuette is now a gold capital 'A'

The people behind the most famous award ceremony in the world have given their mascot a makeover - and may we say, Oscar, it rather suits you!

The prestigious Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences yesterday unveiled a new logo in the hope it will focus more attention on the organisation's wider work, instead of just being Hollywood's biggest trophy fest.

The old logo featured the distinctive Oscar silhouette against a gold oval but the new one, while not much different, creates a large capital 'A' surrounding the man every actor and actress wants on their mantlepiece.

The Academy's marketing chief Christina Kounelias explained why they had decided to change the logo and said: "Two years ago we began a thoughtful internal dialogue regarding the visual identity of the Academy, and found a need for a new design system that reflects the creativity of our organization.

"We set out to build something that accurately reflects our community of artists, their diverse talents, and the creative process they employ to bring disparate ideas together into a single vision.

"The new logo spotlights the Oscar from above – creating a triangular shape and uniting the "A" of the Academy with our iconic statuette. This design gives the Academy a presence in its own logo for the first time, and underscores our efforts to support creative arts and sciences year-round."

On January 16th, the Academy will unveil its nominees for Hollywood's biggest award ceremony on March 2nd.
