Sir Ian McKellan Slams Homophobic Hollywood
Lord of the Rings actor Sir Ian McKellen has criticised Hollywood for its culture of keeping gay men in their tightly bolted closets.

McKellen said that he found it distressing that American actors still had a hard time when being honest about their sexuality in Hollywood.

Speaking at the International Berlin Film Festival, McKellen was not very hopeful about the impact gay cowboy movie Brokeback Mountain may have on Hollywood.

He said: "It is very, very, very difficult for an American actor who wants a film career to be open about his sexuality and even more difficult for a woman,"

"The film industry is very old-fashioned in California."

"It's very distressing to me that that should be the case.

The openly gay McKellen was awarded an honorary Golden Bear at the ceremony in Berlin.
