Will 'Belfie Be Next? 'Selfie' Word Of The Year Thanks To Kim Kardashian And Co

Twitter term beat out Miley Cyrus' favourite 'Twerk'

"Selfie" has been named as the word of the year by Oxford Dictionaries, with the likes of Kim Kardashian, Rihanna and Justin Bieber no doubt helping propel the social media term into everyday conversation.

The word, used to describe a self-portrait photo, was added to the Oxford Dictionaries Online in August, and although it's not yet in the Oxford English Dictionary, it's still been declared the word of 2013.

Research suggested its frequency in the English language had increased by a massive 17,000% in the last year alone ,Oxford Dictionaries report,  Other shortlisted words included Miley Cyrus' favourite activity "twerk" and "binge-watch" - meaning watching lots of TV.

To qualify, a word doesn't actually need to have been coined within the past 12 months, but it does need to have become prominent or notable in that time.

Selfie is defined by Oxford Dictionaries as "a photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically with a smartphone or webcam and uploaded to a social media website".

The term was actually coined way back in 2002 when a man posted a picture of injuries to his face. He said sorry for the out of focus snap, saying that it was not because he was drunk but because it was a selfie.

It might have been first used over ten years ago but Kim Kardashian and co have helped launch the word into the mainstream this year.

With Kim sharing her already infamous "belfie" last month though, could the term for a close-up bum shot, be 2014's word of the year? We'll have to wait and see!
