The project is reportedly based upon Penn�s adaptation of Jon Krakauer�s bestselling book.
The book tells the story of Christopher McCandles who after graduating from college in 1992 abandoned his life to hitch hike to Alaska and return to wilderness.
After four months of living rough he died, and his emaciated body was found in an abandoned bus.
�Into the Wild� will be Penn�s first directorial project since he directed �The Pledge� in 2001.
Earlier this month Sean Penn�s brother, Chris Penn was found dead at his Californian home, he was 40.
