Matthew McConaughey's Wife Confesses She Didn't Recognise Her Husband After Dramatic Weight Loss For Dallas Buyers Club

Camila Alves says 50 pound weight loss made her husband a stranger

Matthew McConaughey dropped nearly 50 pounds for his role in forthcoming movie Dallas Buyers Club, and his transformation was so remarkable that the actor's wife has confessed she didn't even recognise him!

Matthew, 43, plays Texas electrician Ron Woodroof with the film following his battle with US pharmaceutical companies after being diagnosed as HIV-positive in the eighties. The role required the actor to lose his famously buff physique, and shed a huge amount of weight.

The actor's model and designer wife Camila Alves has now confessed that she didn't see one bit of her husband when watching the movie. When asked by Access Hollywood which one of Matthew's movies is her favourite, 30-year-old Camila revealed:

''I think 'Dallas Buyers Club' is my favourite movie right now. It's the one that I really did not see one cent of my husband in it.''

Asked by her husband during the interview whether he was ''grumpy'' at home during the shoot, which took place last winter, Camila added: ''You were not grumpy, but your sense of humour was definitely different.''

In a previous interview, Matthew reveals just what he went through to shed the pounds, confessing that it helped to have Camila preparing his meals.

“I ate a lot of fish, but only five ounces of it, and then a cup of vegetables,” Matthew told Access’ Scott “Movie” Mantz at a junket for the drama at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival, adding that at first he had to step up the exercise in order to get his weight down:

“I started off doing a lot of exercise, burning 1,800 calories a day,” he said. “I had to do that for two weeks. My goal was to lose four pounds a week. So I was doing that for the first two weeks, lost eight pounds."

“And then I had a week where I had an injury and I couldn’t exercise, and I stayed on the same diet but I lost the same amount of weight. I was like oh, well hang on. Let me see if I can do this without exercise! And I lost the same amount of weight," he said.

“It helps to have a wife who’s preparing your meal,” he said of Camila, who he married in 2012. “And you don’t take any meetings out at the pizza joint or the buffet!"

Dallas Buyers Club hits UK cinemas in February 2014.
