Pharrell Williams has jumped to the defence of his close friend Miley Cyrus claiming that the singer is simply misunderstood following the intense backlash she received for her twerking performance with Robin Thicke at the MTV Video Music Awards last month, while promising that “she's a threat” to the music industry.

The 40-year-old producer, who worked with Daft Punk on 'Get Lucky' and Robin on 'Blurred Lines,' has spent an increasing amount of time with Miley, 20, in the studio recently recording tracks for her upcoming album 'Bangerz.'

The 'We Can't Stop' singer caused uproar in the aftermath of her raunchy VMAs performance, which saw her gyrate on Robin and touch herself with a rubber foam hand while performing his smash hit single, however, it seems Pharrell wasn't disappointed with Miley and attributes her at times shocking behaviour to her young age.

“The world has no idea who she really is, they've gotten just a slice,” Pharrell told MTV News UK insisting that the youngster has been wrongly judged.

“If you think about it, when you were 20-years old and you threw caution to the wind, you did so. Your friends were around, your family was around, strangers were around but it was in the confines of your own privacy, she's done so in public.”

Addressing the VMAs controversy, Pharrell added: “It''s interesting because while everyone thinks they know who she is and what she's all about now, and they're like 'oh, we got it. We saw that performance, we know.' You have no idea.

“I'll say this, I'll remind you she's from Nashville, her dad is Billy Ray Cyrus and her godmother is Dolly Parton. All I'm saying is, get ready. That girl's a threat.”

Miley was highly criticised for stripping off to a nude latex two-piece with young children watching in the audience and at home, but Pharrell “commends” Miley for her braveness.

“I commend anybody that unzips and bares what they're thinking to the world, cleared for judgement - especially the way she did it, it's so smart dude,” Pharrell said.

“Like when you guys hear the rest of the music, you'll be like, 'Oh, we thought it was just one thing,' which was totally awesome but wait to you hear that tone. I'm telling you.”

Meanwhile, Miley has addressed the scandal for the first time this week, revealing that she and Robin had actually planned exactly how to make the performance as shocking as possible in order to "make history."

“Me and Robin the whole time said, 'You know we're about to make history right now',” Miley told MTV News.

“What's amazing is I think now, we're three days later and people are still talking about it. They're over thinking it. You're thinking about it more than I thought about it when I did it. Like, I didn't even think about it 'cause that's just me.”
