Katy Perry's Roar To Outsell Lady Gaga's Applause With 450,000 Downloads In First Week?

Will Katy beat Gaga to the top spot in this weekend's charts?

Katy Perry's new single Roar is off to a great start after being released last week, expecting to sell a whopping 450,000 copies in it's first week, Billboard reports, leaving Lady Gaga's comeback single Applause trailing behind with an estimated 200,000 to 225,000 downloads.

Both singer's singles were released to digital retailers on Monday and Tuesday this week (August 12 and 13), with the songs taken off Perry and Gaga's eagerly anticipated upcoming albums.

Katy's Roar is taken off her new LP Prism, due out on October 22, whilst Lady Gaga's Applause is the first single taken from her much talked about upcoming album ARTPOP, due out on November 11.

On Monday, there were early indications that both singles could sell 400,000 downloads. However, it looks like Katy may pip Gaga to the post in this week's chart battle.

Meanwhile, Katy's beau John Mayer has spoken out about his other half's new single.

“I remember hearing it, going like, ‘Wow what an interesting experience’ to hear something that you identify as massive before it’s massive,” John told Billboard.

“I thought it was a really sweet, unforgettable sort of experience to hear someone’s work while they still have a very nascent relationship with it. In a way you get swallowed up by it, it’s so big.”

“Because it’s such an incredibly big song that it doesn’t need you to tell anybody, while you’re eating lunch, [That] millions of people are going to be dancing on tables to that," they added.

“I immediately thought about Katy and I was like, what a cool voice. What a cool artistic personality to have on. So you get these two sides to this relationship that are brutally honest but no less universal.”
