Phyllis Gates was the secretary for Hudsons talent agent when she met the actor in 1954. After a few dates they moved in together and were married the following year after Hudson finished filming Giant with James Dean.
According to MSN, Gates wrote in her autobiography, My Husband, Rock Hudson about their relationship.
She wrote: "I couldn't believe that this was really happening to me, that Phyllis Gates of Montevideo, Minnesota, was marrying Rock Hudson, the movie star,"
On their honeymoon Hudson said to her: "We must always stick together and not let anyone try to pull us apart. Hollywood is full of a lot of vicious people who spread rumours. You must never believe any of them".
Gates eventually figured out that their marriage was a sham to get rid of homosexual rumours about Hudson; however, she could not ignore the number of gentleman callers Hudson had.
Finally a friend of hers told her that her husband had been sleeping with another actor during the filming of A Farewell To Arms.
The coupe divorced in 1958 and allegedly never set eyes on one another again, Hudson died of Aids in 1987Gates died at her home in Marina del Rey, Los Angeles aged 80.
