Get Ready For The Beard! Leonardo DiCaprio 'To Play Russian Monk Rasputin In New Film'

Leo is reportedly swapping Gatsby for Rasputin

Leonardo DiCaprio is currently wowing as Jay Gatsby in Baz Luhrmann's big screen take on the Great Gatsby but the actor could soon be swapping the American icon's clean cut looks for an altogether hairier style as he reportedly signs up to play Russian monk Rasputin.

Deadline are reporting that the 38-year-old is in talks to star in Rasputin, a Warner Bros biopic of the Russian monk and adviser to the Russian Imperial family, the Romanovs in the early 20th century.

The US site report that Warner Bros have acquired the project in a pitch made by writer Jason Hall. The big budget biopic will tell the tale of how the monk was invited into the family fold by Tsar Nicholas II and his wie Alexandra, who relied on him as a mystic advisor and healer for their son Alexi who suffered from hemophilia.

The monk's story was made for the movies with numerous attempts made on his life, as many saw him as a charlatan and rampant womaniser. Rasputin finally met his end at the hands of a group of noblemen in 1916 who had decided that Rasputin's influence over the Tsarina had made him a threat to the empire.

Rasputin's story has been told on screen numerous times before, but Hall's new film will reportedly explore less-discussed aspects of his life including "the complicated elements of a child who lost the better part of himself when his brother died and and was capable of kindness but also a ruthlessness".

The film will be produced by Langley Park’s Kevin McCormick, by DiCaprio’s Appian Way partner Jennifer Davisson Killoran and Peter Morgan, who’s a producer on the Hall-scripted adaptation of American Sniper, which Steven Spielberg will direct with Bradley Cooper playing Navy SEAL elite sniper Chris Kyle.
