Will Smith Hints At Quitting Blockbusters After Latest Movie Bombs At Box Office

Could After Earth be his last attempt at a box office smash movie?

Will Smith has hinted he will be moving away from blockbusters movies just days after his latest film, After Earth, failed to make number one at the box office.

A summer film starring Will Smith was once guaranteed a box office smash, with audiences flocking to see the Fresh Prince of Bel Air star in hit films Men in Black, Independence Day and I, Robot.

His latest movie After Earth, also starring Will’s son Jaden Smith, opened at number three in US box office last weekend after only making $27.5 million.

Critics have panned After Earth, with many describing it as one of the worst films of 2013.

The sci-fi tale cost an estimated $130 million dollars to make, and Will has defended the film.

"It's been an absolute necessity that the movie be a blockbuster, but I think I'm going to start moving out of that and finding more danger in my artistic choices,” Will explained to Digital Spy.

But it looks like the former rapper might have to put his artistic movies on hold, as Will Smith is set to make sequels to I, Robot, Hancock and the Bad Boys franchise over the next few years.

After Earth will be released in the UK on June 7.
