Star Trek Into Darkness Might Be A Hit But Writer Apologises For Alice Eve's Underwear Scene

Damon Lindelof claims the scene was 'gratuitous'

Star Trek Into Darkness has managed to top the US box office taking over $70 million and even knocking Iron Man 3 off the top spot, but it's has it's faults and now its writer Damon Lindelof has apologised for Alice Eve's underwear scene, claiming it was "gratuitous".

Some Star Trek fans felt that the random underwear scene in which Alice Eve shows off her perfect Hollywood bod in black lingerie was out of place.

With Doctor Carol Marcus (Eve), the Starfleet science officer, stripping down into before putting on her special torpedo disarming armour Lindelof, the movie's head producer and writer, has apologised.

"I copped to the fact that we should have done a better job of not being gratuitous in our representation of a barely clothed actress. We also had Kirk shirtless in underpants in both movies. Do not want to make light of something that some construe as mysogenistic (sic)," he wrote in a series of tweets last night, before adding: "What I'm saying is I hear you, I take responsibility and will be more mindful in the future."

Lindelof then quipped: "Also, I need to learn how to spell 'misogynistic.'"

Despite its stellar cast including the return of Chris Pine, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg and Zachary Quinto with Benedict Cumberbatch as the movie's villain, the film failed to beat the previous Star Trek film's opening weekend.

Paul Dergarabedian, an analyst for box-office tracker Hollywood.com, puts this down to the belief that Star Trek "remains a fan-boy movie".

"It doesn't seem to have the same kind of cross-over appeal as say an Iron Man or some of these others," he has said.

"It's a very specific brand, but I think the general public would love this movie, because it's such an action movie. But to get a hundred-million-plus opening weekend, unless you're Twilight, you really have to cross over to all audiences."
