Johnny Depp Was Close To Death In Horse Accident On The Lone Ranger Set

Star reveals that he could've been bludgeoned beneath the hooves!

Johnny Depp was almost killed by his horse when filming new Disney flick The Lone Ranger, narrowly escaping the animal crushing his head after falling off.

The actor, who stars as Tonto in the western with Armie Hammer playing the title character, revealed how he almost came a cropper while making the film.

“The horse was unaware that the saddle I was wearing to sit on top of it was sort of jerry-rigged, kind of faked,” Depp said.

“When we came down, the saddle slipped and I went to the left and (lost) the reins, somehow I had the wherewithal to grab his mane - all very calm for some reason, I figured fear would kick in, but it didn't,” the From Hell actor told David Letterman on The Late Show.

"I saw in front of my eyes these very muscular horse legs and the striations of muscles moving, this kind of death machine,” Depp added, revealing how close he came to having his head scrambled by the horse on which he spends large parts of the film playing native American warrior Tonto.

The star told of his terror, continued, saying: “One word popped into my head - hooves! You know? Hooves. In any case, mind the hooves."

“The one thing that saved me was the horse's instinct to lift his front legs and go over me. If not, it was coming straight down into the head, “ Depp said.

Happily Mr Depp got away with his set-to with the equine menace, and now is ready to promote the film, set for release in August this year.
