Acclaimed author Hilary Mantel has been slammed following an apparent damning assessment of Kate Middleton, labelling her as a “mannequin with no personality”. But the Booker Prize winner isn't the only one to have criticised Kate Middleton in the press over the years...
From Morrissey to Kelly Osbourne, we've gathered up some of the most famously scathing accounts of our beloved Duchess of Cambridge - and named and shamed them here.
Vive le Middleton!
Morrissey has never been a fan of the Royal Family (WENN.com)
Morrissey, of The Smiths fame, has made no secret of the fact he's a serious anti-royalist. So we weren't exactly surprised when, in the wake of the hoax phone call that led to the death of one of KMiddy's nurses committing suicide, he somehow found a way to blame the Duchess of Cambridge. In an interview with 5 News, he accused a seriously unwell (at the time) Kate of being to blame for the suicide - not to mention of faking her illness:
"She feels no shame about the death of this woman, and she’s saying nothing about the death of this poor woman."
"Does she [Middleton] have a health condition? Is it anorexia or is it pregnancy? … I mean morning sickness already? So much hoo haw and then suddenly as bright as a button as soon as this poor woman dies she's out of hospital? It doesn't ring true."
Ouch Morrissey. Ouch.
2. The Queen (...though probably not)
According to tenuous sources at Life & Style, Kate Middleton received a smackdown from Queen Elizabeth II last year when she supposedly ordered that KMiddy - who is, essentially, the relative equivalent of a commoner - be forced to curtsey to princesses Beatrice and Eugenie. In public AND in private.
“It’s a total humiliation for Kate... It’s like a demotion for her in the royal family, and the queen is the one who ordered this.”
While we highly doubt that Queen Liz would do such a thing to Prince William's wife, the rumour still stands today. Awkward.
3. The Italian press
Not only did Chi publish photos of a pregnant Kate in her bikini on the front cover of their magazine - despite the pleas issued by the Royal Family for privacy - but they also dismissed the photographs as dull in a discussion with Italian news website Corriere.it.
“They are images of such unexceptional normality that there is only limited mention of them on the cover of the magazine.”
Way to go make yourselves look like nice guys there, Chi.
4. Kelly Osbourne

While the majority of the British public have praised Kate Middleton for recycling her fashionable ensembles during the recession (such a good example!), Kelly Osbourne has slammed the Duchess for making a "fashion faux pas" in an interview with US Weekly.
"In England , they're like 'Look how thrifty she’s being, showing the British public that the Royals are in a recession as well.' Only in this country they call it a faux pas.”
“I’m sorry, but if I had that job I would only wear it once.”
Miaow! What do you sharpen those claws with, eh Kelly?
5. Vivienne Westwood
Fashion designer Vivienne Westowood has got beef with the Duchess of Cambridge too - but it's far more relevent than her fashion choices. Ahem. Yup, in an interview with The Sunday Times, the designer criticised Kate Middleton for her heavy eye makeup.
"I think she's got a problem with eye make-up! The sharp line around her eyes makes her look hard. Either she should be smudgy or wear none."
We wonder if Kate took Vivienne's scathing advice to heart...?
6. Katie Couric
Kate has come under fire for her weight several times (Splash)
Katie Couric, a pretty big name in the world of international media, came under fire when she broke the unwritten rule and criticised Kate Middleton for her weight during a public Q&A session.
"I think it would be really interesting to interview Kate Middleton because I think she has comported herself so well since she has been thrust in the limelight. I think she needs to eat more because she’s so thin."
Unsurprisingly, the public were NOT amused.
