He was in one of the biggest boy bands of all time with the world at their feet and boast holding the record for being the top-selling album group of the 21st century in the UK - but Brian McFadden believe that One Direction are even better.

The former member of Westlife has said that the X Factor boy band have the edge over the Irish crooners because they are more "radio-friendly.

Speaking to the Daily Star, he said: "One Direction songs are proper radio records, but Westlife were about selling albums."

Brian also admitted that he would love to be one of the judge's on the next series of The X Factor.

He said: "If Simon Cowell rang me tomorrow I'd be in the car and straight down there."

Last year, McFadden, 32, left his post on the judging panel of Australia's Got Talent and is currently focusing on his music career.

Last September he released his fourth studio album, 'The Irish Connection', which features duets with Sinead O'Connor and Ronan Keating, but only in Australia.

He is currently supporting Ronan Kearing on his UK Fires Tour, his first live appearance in seven years.

He was in Westlife from 1998 until 2004 but then band carried on without him until they split for good last year.
