'Nick Jonas' Diabetes Treatment Is Exhausting'

Say the Jonas Brother's father...

Tuesday 29th Jul 2008

Those who think Nick Jonas’s diabetes plight is easy should think again says the father of the Jonas Brothers.

Kevin Jonas Sr. has to watch his 15-year old son manage his insulin levels everyday, and insists those who dismiss the blood sugar disease should spend a day on a tourbus with Nick to see how tough it is.

The young singer, who was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in 2005, spent nine months trying to stabilise his condition and now has an exhaustive daily routine of jabs, tests and treatment - just to stay healthy.

His dad says: "I can't tell you how frustrating it is to hear people belittle diabetes because it's maintainable.

"They've never had to sit on a bus when a pump didn't work and a second pump didn't work... and a third didn't, and he had to give himself a shot when we're driving down a highway.

"Everybody on our team is on full alert, watching every move Nick makes on that stage every single night of his life."

In a new Rolling Stone magazine expose, Nick reveals he has an insulin pump and catheter attached to his back when he performs so he can stabilise the insulin levels in his system throughout shows.

He also pricks his finger as much as 12 times a day so he can check his blood-sugar levels.

Poll  Should Nick quit the Jonas Brothers because of his diabetes?

Yes - They should all split up

No - He's managed ok with it so far

  • My 9 y.o. daughter was diagnosed w/ Type 1 in Feb. of this year. Knowing that Nick Jonas has the same diagnosis helped her tremendously. I wish we could thank both Nick and his parents for being so honest about his diabetes. She sees that life is FUN and NORMAL and that alone speaks volumes. We'll be @the JB concert @Darien Lake on Frday the 15th, maybe my daughter, RILEY, will get her chance.

  • Of course he shouldn't quit!My father has type 1 diabetes and he has to jab himself at least 4 times a day, and take blood sugar levels at least once a week. It's ok though, because it's managable. I imagine it affects him (Nick) more because he leads an active life (esp on stage), however as he's so young and has enough money for the best treatments it should be ok. He just has to keep fit, which he is doing. I think it's just annoying for the person and their family. Great music.

  • Nick Jonas should not quit singing and writing songs because of his diabetes! Im a type1 diabetic i think diabetes can't get in the road of what you love doing. He should not give up on something he loves because of his diabetes!

  • i just wanna say, i've had type 1 diabetes since i was 8 im 16 now and it really isn't as hard as its made out to be once its under control. You find you can do everything just the same as everybody else can once its under control, you may disagree but i think nicks dad is exaggerating, and if its as under control as they make it out to be then Nicks diabetes should never once get in the way of his normal performing. Hes an inspiration :):) x x x x x xxxxxxx
